Yes. Pre-booking a school session is essential for all. This will help us ensure that your experience at the museum is comfortable and unique. It also helps us avoid overcrowding in our galleries.

We are currently planning our home education offer and are aiming to launch in Spring 2027. If you would like to be the first to know more, send us an email!

To arrange a booking for a school session, please fill out our online form, listing the potential date of your visit, number and age group of students and the topic you are interested in exploring. If your requested dates are available, our team will get back to you to confirm the booking. If your dates are unavailable, our team will give you alternative dates. If your query is urgent, please call 01908 316222

Our Museum can accommodate a maximum of 60 students per school visit to avoid overcrowding and to ensure the students have an enjoyable and educational visit. For groups larger than 60, please contact our education team at education@mkmuseum.org.uk

During a visit, your school group will be divided into smaller groups (depending on number of students). Each group will be given a guided and hands-on tour of the museum, depending on the theme you have requested. The tour will last a maximum of 2 hour. You then have the option of staying for lunch and exploring the rest of the museum on a self-guided tour. The format of the tour may differ depending on the theme.

You can book a self-guided session on days we are open to the public (please check museum opening hours as they may vary based on season). The cost of the session will be £7.50 per child. Arrival from 10:30, departure by 2:30.

Yes. From September 2026, any additional guided experiences can be booked for 50p per child. This could include a Victorian school room session, object handling, a tour of the garden, make your own toy or design your own city activities.

We have a whole range of themes available for your school visit, from Romans through to New Milton Keynes. You can find more information and detail of all of our sessions here.

Volunteer led sessions can be:

Full day: 10 am- 2 pm (inclusive of self-facilitated tour of the museum)

Half day: 2 hours (10 am – 12 pm / 12 pm – 2 pm)

Self-facilitation sessions: Arrival from 10:30, departure by 2:30.

To ensure you have a safe and enjoyable visit, we encourage you to visit the museum to conduct a preliminary visit and create your own Risk Assessment. You can also contact a member of our learning team to discuss any aspects of your visit (education@mkmuseum.org.uk)

For sessions booked on days we are closed to the public, you will be able to explore the Victorian House, Street of Shops, the Barn and the Hall of Transport. Other exhibition spaces are only open subject to the availability of room guides so we cannot guarantee that you will be able to access this during your visit.

Visits booked on days we are open to the public have access to all areas of the museum to explore in smaller groups.

When you arrive, our education guides will greet you at the main entrance you the museum. They will give you a small induction to the museum, its facilities and how to handle objects. They will then take your lunch boxes and water bottles and split you into smaller groups. You will follow your respective guides into the museum to start your guided tour.

Our volunteer led sessions run for 2 hours. Any delay in your arrival will mean that we have to adjust your experience slightly to keep to time. Please update us with any expected change to your arrival time.

Yes, we do have a space for you to eat lunch. To access this space, please ensure you include this information as part of your initial booking enquiry.

Yes, we have space where coats and bags can be kept during your visit. Please note that items are left there at your own risk, and the museum cannot take responsibility for any loss or damage.

Most parts of the museum are wheelchair accessible. We encourage you to arrange a pre-visit to ensure that your students will have a comfortable experience at the museum. We can make alterations to the tour to ensure wheelchair access.

We would like to provide everyone with an enjoyable and inclusive visit. Please get in touch with us at education@mkmuseum.org.uk if you want to arrange a visit for children with additional needs.

Volunteer led sessions:

Full day: £8.50 per child

Half day: £7.00 per child

You can make cash payments or pay by cheque or BACS (cheques to be made payable to Milton Keynes Museum Trust Limited) upon receiving the invoice. Account details will be on the emailed invoice.
